Academic Performance
Percent of students meeting or exceeding state standards, by grade.
Located in SAN ANTONIO, TX. Serving grades 05 through 08.
KIPP Camino Academy is a charter middle school serving grades five through eight in San Antonio, located at West Commerce Street. It is one of the schools in the KIPP Texas network, which has recently undergone significant change. In December, the KIPP Texas Board announced that Camino Academy will close at the end of the current school year, with the closure taking effect in 2026-2027. Families whose children attend will be guaranteed placement at another KIPP Texas school if they choose to remain in the network.
The school serves a student body that is predominantly Hispanic and economically disadvantaged. The vast majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, reflecting the economic circumstances of the families in the area. The enrollment is small, with roughly balanced classes across the four grade levels.
State assessment results from 2024-2025 show that Camino Academy's proficiency rates across tested subjects and grades fall below the midpoint among districts in Bexar County. In English language arts, proficiency improves with grade level, reaching close to half of eighth graders meeting or exceeding expectations, while reading proficiency in sixth and seventh grade sits around or below a quarter. Mathematics proficiency is weaker across the board, with only a small fraction of students in sixth and seventh grade meeting or exceeding state standards. Science proficiency is similarly modest, though eighth-grade performance is higher than sixth-grade results. Social studies performance is notably low, with only a small share of eighth graders meeting or exceeding expectations.
When aggregating across all tested subjects and grade levels, the school's overall proficiency index positions it below the midpoint among Bexar County schools. About half of students score at the "approaches" level across subjects, indicating they are working toward but have not yet met grade-level standards. The share meeting or mastering standards is small, with proficiency concentrated in English language arts. A parent may want to look into the school's academic support and intervention strategies, particularly in mathematics and social studies, as these remain areas where most students are not yet demonstrating grade-level mastery.
San Antonio itself is one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, anchored by healthcare and bioscience employment, military installations, and a growing technology sector. The housing market in the school's zip code area is relatively affordable compared to the state benchmark, with median values well below the state average, though rents have risen modestly in recent months. The city's economy and growth trajectory create jobs in sectors ranging from healthcare to IT and cybersecurity.
Because this school is scheduled to close, families should plan accordingly. Children will have the option to transfer to another KIPP school, but the closure eliminates this particular campus as a choice for the following school year. The broader KIPP Texas network has improved its overall accountability rating from a D to a B over the past two years, suggesting the organization has made academic gains, though the closure reflects enrollment pressures and consolidation within the network.
