Everett Public Schools serves the city of Everett, a densely settled, majority-immigrant community just north of Boston. The district enrolls a large student body from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student population is overwhelmingly Hispanic, with a much smaller share of white, Black, and Asian students. A substantial portion of students are English language learners, and the district has seen a sharp increase in that group in recent years. Data on the share of students qualifying for free or reduced-price meals was not available in the reporting we used.

On the Massachusetts state assessments, known as NextGen MCAS, the district’s proficiency rates are low across the tested subjects. In the grades three through eight combined results, roughly one in five students scored proficient or above in math and English language arts. Science proficiency was similar. Eighth-grade social studies results were also low. These figures place Everett’s overall academic performance among the lowest of the districts in Middlesex County. A parent considering the district should expect that most students are not yet meeting grade-level benchmarks in the core subjects and may want to ask the district about the specific interventions and supports in place.

Chronic absenteeism—defined as missing a substantial portion of the school year regardless of reason—affects a large share of students, with the district’s rate landing among the highest in the county. This is a meaningful factor for families to understand, as it signals that a sizable number of students are missing significant instructional time. Data on student discipline, staffing ratios, and course access were not available in the materials we reviewed, so questions about school climate and program breadth would need to be directed to the district directly.

Everett operates a set of elementary schools, a middle school, and Everett High School. The high school has recently received a major investment from the city: new facilities include a culinary arts kitchen, a medical arts lab, upgraded technology classrooms, a weight room, and a fitness center. These additions expand the district’s career and technical education pathways, giving students a chance to prepare for specific trades or further study. The district has also invested in dual-language programming. It now runs three Spanish-English dual-language programs across its schools, including a new kindergarten through fifth-grade program at one elementary school. ESL staffing has been expanded to serve the growing number of English language learners.

The housing market in Everett is expensive relative to national averages. Home values put the city well above the state’s median, and rents are similarly elevated. The combination of high housing costs and the district’s own budget pressures is worth noting. In a citywide vote in November 2024, residents approved a Proposition 2½ override that allows the city to raise property taxes above the state’s usual limit. Officials said the override was needed to close a multi-million dollar shortfall in the school budget and to avoid significant cuts to programs. For families moving into Everett, this means property taxes are rising and will continue to fund the district’s operations.

The district did not report a graduation rate in the data we received. For a system serving all grades, that is a significant gap. A parent would want to check with the district directly for that figure, as well as for detailed information about how well students transition to college or careers after high school.

Everett Public Schools operates in a community where academic proficiency and attendance are pressing challenges, yet the district is actively reshaping its programming with new career pathways and dual-language tracks. The financial landscape is tight, and voters have stepped in to support the schools through higher taxes. The student body is diverse and includes many families for whom English is a new language.
