Appalachian State University Academy at Elkin was a small public school serving grades 2 through 4 within Elkin City Schools. It operated as a partnership between Appalachian State University and the local school district, one of nine UNC System lab schools across North Carolina. The school opened in August 2022 with a focus on exploration and literacy-based learning, designed as a distinctive alternative for families in the area seeking a small-class environment.
The school closed effective June 30, 2024. The Elkin City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to end the program after less than two years of operation. According to publicly reported accounts, the closure was driven by multiple factors.
