The Gathering Place was a charter school serving kindergarten through sixth grade in Bexar County, but it closed at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. This is the defining fact for anyone who previously enrolled or considered enrolling a child there. Families affected by the closure needed to transition to other schools.

The Texas Education Agency declined to renew the school's charter, citing academically unacceptable performance, and the board decided not to appeal that decision. The closure was also driven by financial strain from lower-than-expected enrollment. For context, the school had been open only since 2020.

Academic performance was a persistent challenge. On state STAAR assessments, the school ranked in the bottom tier of Texas elementary schools across the three years before closure. In the most recent results, proficiency in reading and language arts ranged from the low twenties to low forties across grades three through six. Math proficiency was considerably weaker, ranging from zero in fifth grade to roughly one in five in third grade. Science showed even sharper difficulty, with only a small fraction of fifth-graders meeting proficiency on that assessment. These results placed the school well below the median for districts across Bexar County.

Chronic absenteeism was elevated and stood slightly above the midpoint for the county's districts, a potential factor in academic outcomes and a sign of engagement challenges.

The school served a small population of roughly six hundred students, with a student body that was majority Hispanic and a meaningful share of white and Black students. The enrollment was spread fairly evenly across the grade bands served, with slightly higher counts in the early grades.

Families who had children at The Gathering Place in its final year would have been required to find new placements. The closure at the end of a school year provided some time for transition, but displacement of this kind is disruptive. For those who had selected the school based on its charter model, location, or educational approach, the loss of the option meant reassessing among the public and charter schools available in the San Antonio area.
