Bastrop ISD is a mid-sized district serving a broad span from pre-K through high school across a growing exurban region in Bastrop County, roughly south of Austin. The district has experienced sustained enrollment growth and is in the midst of major capital expansion to meet it. In May 2023, voters approved a substantial bond with no tax rate increase, financing two new elementary schools, conversion of intermediate schools to middle schools, replacement of an aging elementary campus, and fine arts and academic facilities. A prior bond from May 2021 had similarly passed without raising tax rates. These back-to-back approvals mark the district's first new bonds in roughly a decade; the most recent school opening before 2023 was Cedar Creek High School. Adelton Elementary, the ninth school and first new elementary in years, opened in fall 2025. A tenth elementary and converted middle schools are also coming online. Trustees rezoned attendance boundaries in January 2025 to redistribute students as enrollment is projected to grow by a modest percentage in the coming years, a change that directly determines which campus families' children will attend. Starting in fall 2026, the district is launching a virtual academy, offering students the option of online learning with district-supplied computers, full-time virtual educators, self-paced coursework with weekly deadlines, and in-person testing.

The community itself is predominantly Hispanic, making up a clear supermajority of the student body, with smaller populations of white and Black students. Median household income in the district's service areas runs slightly above the national benchmark. Home values have declined modestly year-over-year, and median rents reflect affordability relative to incomes in the region, though homeownership remains a multi-income household proposition. The district's chronic absenteeism rate falls below the county median, placing it in the better-performing range among Bastrop County's three districts on that measure.

State testing data from 2024-25 show proficiency rates that are notably low across both math and English language arts at most grade levels tested. In math, proficiency ranges narrowly, with elementary grades clustering around the low-to-mid range and middle grades dipping lower. In ELA, elementary grades show slightly higher proficiency, particularly in grade six, while middle grades remain modest. Science proficiency is likewise limited at the grades tested. When all tested subjects and grades are averaged together, the district's overall proficiency index falls below the county midpoint.
