Crosby ISD is a mid-sized district in Harris County, east of Houston, that spans about eleven schools serving roughly seven thousand students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district sits in a rapidly growing part of the region, and that growth is pressing hard on its buildings and budgets.

The test results paint a mixed picture. In reading, the district reaches about half the students at grade levels six through eight, and stronger performance in earlier grades, with fifth grade reaching about two-thirds proficiency. Math is more uneven. Fourth and fifth graders approach or slightly exceed the midpoint for proficiency, but sixth grade drops sharply, and seventh grade is notably weak across the district. Eighth grade math recovers to roughly half. Science and social studies show lower overall performance, with social studies at eighth grade especially soft at under one-fifth proficiency. Across all subjects, when you pool passing and approaching proficiency, the district sits above the midpoint in Harris County, a signal that while proficiency gaps exist, the district is not trailing most of its county peers in basic attainment.

The enrollment is ethnically and racially diverse. Hispanic students make up just over half the district; Black students account for about a quarter; white students just under a third; with smaller populations of Asian, multiracial, and Native American students. The district has had to find workarounds and lean on earlier bond money to patch over the gap.

That prior funding, however, has allowed Crosby High School to finish a substantial expansion that opened this school year, with thirty-two new classrooms, eight labs, and an expanded career and technical education wing. That is the first major construction in the district in decades and directly eases high school crowding. More construction is planned: a standalone sixth-grade campus is approved and expected to open around 2027 or 2028, which will move sixth graders out of Crosby Middle School and into their own building, and leave the middle school serving only seventh and eighth grades. That's a significant reordering of the grade configuration and will ease pressure on a middle school that is over capacity.

The picture, then, is of a district in transition: growing enrollment in an affordable, ethnically mixed, working-class area; test results that are solidly mainstream for the county but with notable weak spots, especially in math at certain grades and in social studies; aging facilities that the failed bond left partly unrepaired; and active capital projects in motion to add classrooms and reorganize grades. For a family, this is a district where affordability is a real advantage, diversity is a given, and where infrastructure strain and test performance gaps are realities to evaluate alongside the expansion work underway. A parent considering this district would benefit from visiting schools, asking about overcrowding and HVAC status at individual campuses, and understanding that the grade reorganization coming in a few years will affect where their middle schooler attends.
