Burlington School District serves Vermont's largest city, covering pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade across a network of schools. The enrollment is substantial for a Vermont district, with a grade distribution that runs evenly from elementary through high school and a particularly large pre-kindergarten program. The student body stands out for its diversity in a state that is predominantly white. A majority of students are white, but the district also has a large Black population, a sizable Asian community, and a meaningful share of students identifying as two or more races, along with a smaller Hispanic presence. For Vermont, this is one of the more racially mixed public school districts you will find.

Several major facility and program changes are reshaping what families can expect. Burlington voters approved a bond to construct a new high school and technical center, a project visible along North Avenue that remains on schedule to open this coming fall. The district has also publicly reported the opening of a new Aviation, Career, and Technical Education Center at Burlington International Airport, housed in a renovated airplane hangar and offering automotive, design engineering and fabrication, and aviation programs through Burlington Technical Center. A renovation of the Integrated Arts Academy at H. O. Wheeler was completed, adding kindergarten classrooms and a geothermal heating and cooling system. Students there had attended class at temporary off-site locations during construction and have since returned to the modernized building. These are visible investments in the district's physical infrastructure and career pathways.

The district has also implemented a Restorative Code of Conduct aimed at reducing suspensions and addressing racial disparities in discipline.
