Somerton Middle School sits in the heart of a small, agricultural city in the fertile Yuma Valley, roughly midway between downtown Yuma and the Mexican border. The city of Somerton has a compact, walkable Main Street corridor with a town plaza, small businesses, and a series of community festivals, including a well-attended Tamale Festival. The local economy is built around citrus and vegetable growing and processing, medical services, and a growing light-industrial and retail sector. Major employers include the school district itself, the Regional Center for Border Health, the Cocopah Nation, and the country's largest Medjool date packing facility. The population has roughly doubled over several decades before stabilizing more recently, and the city has development acreage available for light industrial and commercial projects. Somerton owns its water and wastewater treatment plants and was the first city in the region to develop a citywide recycling program; nine solar projects are also in place.
