Esencia Middle serves grades six through eight in Rancho Mission Viejo, a newer master-planned residential community in South Orange County. The school opened in a purpose-built setting within a walkable village designed around outdoor living, trails, and shared amenities. Across the roughly small enrollment, the student body is predominantly white, with a meaningful Hispanic presence and Asian representation; a modest share of families qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Data on English learners and students receiving special education services was not available.

In math, proficiency shows variation by grade. Sixth grade performs at a solid level, seventh grade is stronger, and eighth grade dips slightly. English language arts is the school's clearer strength, with sixth and seventh grades both proficient and eighth grade tracking nearly as well. Science proficiency at the eighth-grade level, the only grade tested in this subject, sits notably lower than ELA and math, below half of students meeting the standard. Overall, when proficiency rates are averaged across all tested subjects and grades, Esencia stands in the top quartile relative to middle schools countywide in Orange County, reflecting particular strength in reading and writing. A second TK-8 campus is under construction for the nearby Rienda village, opening in the next academic year.

At the district level, Capistrano Unified is Orange County's largest system. In late 2023, the board voted to reject a proposed parental notification policy in a close decision; the proposal would have required staff notification to families in cases involving student distress, potentially including gender identity concerns. That vote positioned the district differently from several neighboring county districts that adopted such measures, a distinction parents weighing student privacy and parental-rights philosophies may consider meaningful. The district has also faced repeated failures in local school bond measures since at least the early 2020s, leaving aging campuses across the system without dedicated local facility funding or a pathway to modernization through a locally approved tax.
