Edison Middle serves grades 5 through 8 in Bakersfield, in Edison Elementary district. The school's academic results are substantially below grade level across all tested subjects. In English language arts across grades 5-8, proficiency ranges from around one in six students in the sixth grade up to about one in three in seventh grade, with an overall rate near one in four. In mathematics the picture is considerably weaker, with proficiency dropping sharply as grade level rises; while fifth graders show proficiency near one in five, sixth graders drop to one in eight, seventh graders to about one in seven, and eighth graders to only about one in forty.
