Laton Middle School serves grades six through eight in a small, unincorporated agricultural community in California's San Joaquin Valley. The school sits within the town of Laton itself rather than on a separated campus, placing it amid the residential and rural fabric of what was once a more thriving settlement but has hollowed out as nearby Hanford absorbed most commercial life. Housing in the area is modest and affordable, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by orchards, dairy operations, and farmland. Most students come from families with limited economic resources; a substantial share of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the student body is predominantly Hispanic, with a much smaller presence of White and other students.

Academically, Laton Middle reports proficiency rates that are substantially below the median among middle schools in Fresno County. In mathematics, fewer than a fifth of sixth graders reached proficiency, and performance improved modestly in seventh grade before dropping again in eighth. English language arts proficiency ranged from about a quarter to a third across the grades. Eighth-grade science proficiency was similarly low.
