Kettleman City Elementary serves kindergarten through eighth grade in an unincorporated farming community in Kings County's San Joaquin Valley, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on Interstate 5. The school sits in a small residential village of older homes, physically separated from the town's commercial highway core. Enrollment is small, under three hundred students, and nearly all qualify for free or reduced-price meals. The student body is entirely Hispanic. State testing data from early 2025 shows the school facing serious academic challenges across all tested subjects and grades.

In English language arts, roughly one in three students achieved proficiency across all tested grades. Third grade performed somewhat better, with about one in four proficient; performance improved in the middle grades, with seventh grade around forty-seven percent proficient and eighth grade around forty-one percent. In mathematics, proficiency rates were much lower across the board. Third and fourth grades hovered around thirteen to fourteen percent proficient; fifth and sixth grades fell to under ten percent; seventh and eighth grades dropped to around three to four percent proficient.
