Round Valley Elementary sits in Covelo, a small, remote mountain town in the heart of Mendocino County's Round Valley. The school serves kindergarten through eighth grade, with a student body of roughly three hundred students, about half of them Native American from the Round Valley tribes and the rest Hispanic or white.

The school's academic performance is very low across both English language arts and mathematics. Many residents do not own cars and must walk or bike along narrow shoulders to reach stores and services; pedestrian and bicycle collisions have been unusually high. The downtown has many empty storefronts. Civic life is anchored by a branch library at a community center, the tribal health center, and the school district itself. There is no public transportation in the area.

The Round Valley Unified School District has built out a distinctive indigenous-language program as a strength. The high school now offers four A-G certified Wailaki language courses and Yuki language courses, allowing students to satisfy college admissions language requirements while learning local tribal heritage languages. This reflects a sustained commitment to Native American studies and cultural continuity for families on and near the reservation.

A federally funded Safe Routes to School project is underway in Covelo, with sidewalk, bike lane, and crosswalk construction scheduled to run into 2029-2030. This infrastructure work is a response to the town's dangerous pedestrian environment and will alter how children walk and bike to school. Housing values in the area are moderate, and the dominant development trajectory is tribal affordable housing aimed at chronic overcrowding rather than market-rate growth.

Round Valley Elementary is a very small school serving a very small, economically stressed, geographically isolated community with substantial academic performance challenges.
