Liberty Elementary serves kindergarten through sixth grade in Victorville, a sprawling High Desert city of car-dependent single-family neighborhoods, large warehouses tied to the former airbase, and commercial strips along arterials. The school sits on Amethyst Road in a zone of utilitarian development about three-quarters of an hour northeast of Los Angeles.

The school enrolls around a thousand students, the majority of them Hispanic, followed by a substantial Black enrollment and smaller numbers of Asian, multiracial, and white students. Nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, placing Liberty firmly in an economically disadvantaged community. The school serves a full span of early grades, with comparable enrollment across kindergarten through sixth grade.

In state assessments administered in the spring of 2025, proficiency rates at Liberty were low across the board. In English language arts, students across all grades scored at around a quarter to a third of students meeting the state's proficiency standard, with third grade performing relatively better. Math proficiency was substantially lower, with only around a fifth of all students meeting standard when tallying across grades, and steep drops as students advance: fourth grade saw proficiency in the low teens, and fifth and sixth grades both dipped into single digits. Science testing at fifth grade showed around one in ten students proficient. These results place Liberty in the bottom quartile of schools across San Bernardino County on overall proficiency. Only one year of assessment data was available, so trend information is not yet present.

Liberty is part of Victor Elementary School District, a kindergarten-through-sixth-grade district organized as a "district of choice" divided into four quadrants. Families can apply to attend any of the district's schools, each built around a distinct theme such as STEAM, gifted and talented, Montessori, or college and career readiness. The district recently expanded to include independent study programs at two schools, allowing students to learn from home with district-provided technology and teacher support. This choice model means families in Victorville may have meaningful options within VESD rather than being assigned to a single neighborhood school, though transportation is free only within a student's residential quadrant.

The district received a major, five-year grant in 2025 to establish community schools hubs at selected campuses. These hubs expand family support services including parenting classes, mental health referrals, food access, financial workshops, and early-literacy programs, with the benefits extending across all eighteen district schools. For a district where nearly all students live in economically disadvantaged households, this represents a durable expansion of wraparound family services beyond the classroom.

Liberty's academic performance is notably low, and a parent may want to look into with the school directly what support structures exist for students falling behind in foundational reading and math, particularly as the grade-level declines in proficiency suggest students may be accumulating learning gaps across the elementary years. The school's location within the district-of-choice framework means families have other VESD schools to consider if they are weighing options.
