Cantrall Intermediate School serves grades four through six in a very small rural village about ten miles north of Springfield. The school building sits in an area with minimal commercial activity and no walkable downtown; the village itself has fewer than a handful of businesses and exists mainly as a residential enclave along a state highway. Housing values in the area are moderate and slightly above state benchmark. Most residents commute to Springfield for work.

The school enrolls around two hundred students, the vast majority of whom are white, with a small multiracial population and very few students from other racial or ethnic backgrounds.
