Shields Middle School serves grades five through eight in the Lower West Side community of Chicago, drawing a student body that is overwhelmingly Hispanic, with small numbers of Black, white, and multiracial students. The school's state assessment results show persistently low proficiency across subjects and grades. In English language arts, proficiency ranges from under 30 percent in seventh grade to about 53 percent in sixth grade, with eighth grade at around 38 percent.
