Severn River Middle School serves grades six through eight in Arnold, a suburban residential community on the Broadneck Peninsula in Anne Arundel County. Arnold is a census-designated place without a traditional downtown center; its civic and educational life is organized around separated campuses along College Parkway and Ritchie Highway. The area is family-oriented, with a notable share of residents under eighteen, and its housing values and rents are elevated relative to national medians, reflecting a market that is fairly expensive even for Maryland. The school itself is a regular public middle school and is part of Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

The student body is predominantly white, with a Hispanic population as the next largest group, followed by smaller shares of students who are Black, identify as two or more races, or are Asian. Roughly one in five students qualifies for free or reduced-price meals, a rate that points to a relatively low level of economic disadvantage compared to many schools statewide.
