Van Winkle Elementary School sits on Whiting Road in Jackson, Mississippi, part of the Jackson Public School District. It is a pre-kindergarten-only school, serving children before they enter the elementary grades. This is a small school, and its enrollment is concentrated almost entirely in pre-K, with a couple of ungraded students alongside them.

The student body is predominantly Black, with a small number of Hispanic students. Every child at Van Winkle qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, which means the school serves a community where economic need is pervasive. Data on special education enrollment and English learners was not available, so those populations go undescribed here.
