Accion Academy is a middle school serving grades six through eight on Fox Street in the Hunts Point-area of the South Bronx, part of New York City Geographic District 12. It is a regular public school, not a charter, and its enrollment is small for a middle school serving three grade levels. The student body is overwhelmingly Hispanic, with Black students making up most of the remaining population. Virtually every enrolled student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, placing the school in the highest tier of economic need. Data on English learners and students with IEPs was not available in what we reviewed.

On the New York State Testing Program, proficiency rates across all three grades in math and ELA sit in a range that is below the midpoint of the six schools that make up the comparison set relative to districts in Bronx County, placing Accion in the bottom quartile on the overall proficiency index. In math, eighth graders score somewhat better than sixth and seventh graders, though none of the grades reaches what would be considered a majority-proficient level. ELA results follow a similar pattern, with seventh grade performing comparatively better than the other two. Eighth-grade science proficiency is lower still. The social studies data that appeared in the records dates from well over a decade ago and is not current; no recent social studies assessment results were available. Trend data across years was not available, so it is not possible to say from this record whether results have been improving, holding, or declining. A parent would reasonably want to ask the school directly about what it is doing to move these numbers and what supports are in place for students who are not yet at grade level.

On that front, the district has made two concrete, lasting changes worth knowing. District 12 was in the first wave of the citywide NYC Reads literacy mandate, adopting the "Into Reading" structured literacy program starting in the fall of 2023, a shift away from school-by-school curriculum choice toward a phonics-grounded approach at the elementary level. The district also participated in the first round of NYC Solves, mandating Illustrative Mathematics for middle and high school grades in the fall of 2024. Since Accion serves middle grades, this means its math instruction has moved to a problem-based, conceptual model. Whether and how those changes are affecting Accion's own outcomes is not yet visible in the data here.

The school sits in a borough that is in an active growth phase. The South Bronx specifically, including the corridors around Mott Haven and Hunts Point, is seeing investment in affordable housing and infrastructure. Publicly reported figures describe the Bronx as leading the city on net new housing units in recent years, with transit improvements including new Metro-North stops planned for Hunts Point among other South Bronx locations. The housing market near the school reflects values that are roughly in line with the statewide median and well above the national median, with rents that have been moving upward. The neighborhood itself has strong transit access, high walkability, and the dense street life typical of this part of the South Bronx.

No information was available on program offerings, extracurriculars, attendance rates, or chronic absenteeism at Accion specifically. Graduation rate does not apply here because the school ends at eighth grade. The civil rights data section carried no reportable fields.

For a family with a child entering or moving through middle school, the clearest picture from this record is a school with a concentrated high-need population, below-average assessed proficiency relative to other Bronx County schools in the comparison set, and recently mandated curriculum shifts in both literacy and math whose effects are not yet fully visible.
