The Brooklyn Green School is a public middle school serving grades six through eight, located on Rochester Avenue in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, within NYC Geographic District 16. It is a small school for its grade band, with three cohorts spread roughly evenly across the three years.

The student body is predominantly Black, with a substantial Hispanic population and smaller shares of other groups. A large majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, placing the school firmly in a high-need community context. Data on English learners and students with IEPs was not available in what we reviewed.

On the New York State assessments, the picture is mixed and worth understanding clearly. In ELA, sixth graders performed around the midpoint, seventh graders performed meaningfully better, and eighth graders landed in roughly the same range as sixth grade. More directly relevant to Brooklyn Green School, the city's NYC Solves initiative is phasing in standardized middle school math curricula across all schools, with full compliance required by fall 2027, publicly reported. This means the math classroom experience at this school is in transition.

A separate policy change also applies: a state law caps middle school class sizes at a maximum of 23 students, phased in to full compliance by 2027-28, with high-need schools like those in District 16 targeted early.
