Manhattan Charter School sits on Attorney Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, serving kindergarten through fifth grade. It is a small school by any measure, with an enrollment that fits within a couple of hundred students across six grades. The school caps individual classes at no more than twenty-five students, publicly reported, which gives it an intimate feel uncommon in a city of New York's density.
The student body is predominantly Hispanic and Black, with very few white or Asian students enrolled. The vast majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, reflecting the economic character of the surrounding neighborhood rather than any sorting mechanism. Data on English learner rates and students with IEPs was not available in the materials we reviewed, so parents whose children fall into those categories may want to ask the school directly about services and staffing ratios.
On the New York State assessments, the picture is uneven across grades and subjects. Fourth grade is a relative strength: in both math and ELA, more than half of fourth graders scored at the proficient level, which represents a meaningfully better outcome than the third and fifth grade cohorts. For middle schoolers specifically, the school is developing an AI Lab described as a partnership with MIT and the first of its kind for that age group on the Lower East Side.
