Heatly School is a PK-12 building serving all of Green Island, a very small, densely packed village just north of Albany on the Hudson River. The school's most significant recent change is structural: in February 2025, district voters approved a plan to send all high schoolers (grades 9-12) to Watervliet High School beginning in September 2025. Heatly will now serve only pre-K through grade 8, with families staying within the district for elementary and middle school, then tuitioned to the neighboring district for high school. The school district cited limited course breadth, inadequate AP and dual-credit offerings, and tight finances as drivers of the decision.

The 2024-25 test data reflects the school as it was operating as a full K-12 building. Reading and math proficiency shows considerable variation by grade. In earlier grades, there are pockets of strength: grade 3 math and ELA results sit in the low-to-mid range, while grade 5 ELA is notably higher. Grade 5 science also shows meaningful proficiency. The Ford plant that once anchored the economy closed and has been demolished; the hydroelectric dam remains. The Starbuck Island redevelopment, completed a few years ago, transformed a contaminated brownfield into a high-density waterfront neighborhood with apartments, shops, restaurants, a marina, and public promenade, creating a walkable riverside presence and physical bridge to downtown Troy across the Green Island Bridge. Employment in the area centers on health care, retail, and construction.

The school sits at 171 Hudson Avenue, the civic and physical center of the district. The school library also serves as a community cooling station during heat events. Transit via the Capital District Transportation Authority connects Green Island to Troy, Watervliet, Cohoes, and Albany; the nearest Amtrak station is Albany-Rensselaer, with no rail service in the village itself.

From a housing perspective, median values in the area are moderate relative to state and national benchmarks, and affordability metrics suggest a mix of owners and renters. The district faced fiscal stress designation from the State Comptroller, which contributed to the difficult decision to discontinue its own high school program.

For families staying through grade 8, Heatly remains a single-school, full-span community anchor where all students share one building. For those continuing to high school, the September 2025 transition shifts the experience to Watervliet, where the district publicly promises expanded course offerings and extracurriculars.
