Millbrook Middle School serves grades six through eight in a small village in central Dutchess County, roughly ninety miles north of New York City. The school's recent state testing data reveals a mixed academic picture: proficiency is solid and above the midpoint among Dutchess County's districts when averaged across tested subjects and grades, but the results show marked grade-level differences, especially a substantial drop in eighth grade. In math, sixth and seventh graders achieved proficiency around the seventy percent mark, but eighth-grade math proficiency fell to forty-five percent. English language arts showed a similar pattern, with about sixty-two percent proficiency in sixth grade, rising to roughly seventy percent in seventh, then declining to about fifty-one percent by eighth grade.
