Prospect Academy is a pre-kindergarten school—serving only that grade—in East Cleveland, a densely built inner-ring suburb of Cleveland on Euclid Avenue. The school is small, with an enrollment of around seventy students, almost all of whom are Black. Its role in the district is foundational: it is the entry point for young children in the East Cleveland City School District system.

Because the school serves only pre-K, it does not administer state tests and has no proficiency data tied to Prospect itself. What matters at this stage is early learning environment, safety, and preparation for entry into the grades that do get tested. State testing data for Prospect Academy begins in third grade at other buildings, but the assessments carried by the district's older students show the academic context into which Prospect's students will move. Third through sixth grade students across the district show proficiency rates in reading and math that fall well below the state median—ranging from single digits in science to roughly a third in English language arts and roughly a quarter to a third in math. Kirk Middle School will house grades five through eight, and Shaw High School will remain home to grades nine through twelve, with the closure of other buildings expected to yield operational savings. The district faces enrollment decline—projections show it shrinking from a current enrollment level toward a much smaller number by the early 2030s.

East Cleveland itself is a city in long-term population loss, with housing stock dating largely to the 1910s and 1920s. The school is part of a district that has made measurable progress on state benchmarks and has just regained full local control after state oversight.
