Wingate Elementary serves a small student body across kindergarten through fifth grade in a rural township setting north of Bellefonte, within the Bald Eagle Area School District. The school enrolls roughly one-third of its students from households qualifying for federal free or reduced-price lunch, a measure of economic need. The enrollment is drawn almost entirely from the surrounding white rural community, with very limited racial diversity.
On state testing, Wingate's results present a split picture. In science, the school shows strong performance, with a substantial majority of tested students meeting or exceeding proficiency. In mathematics, about half of students in grades three through five scored at proficient levels or above. In English language arts, the proficiency rate drops further, to roughly one-third of students tested meeting the standard. Math and ELA proficiency both sit below the midpoint relative to other elementary schools in Centre County, placing the school in a position where a parent may want to look into what supports and interventions the school is putting in place to address the gap, particularly in reading.
The school sits within Boggs Township, a sparse, rural area of owner-occupied homes, State Game Lands, and exceptional outdoor recreation along Bald Eagle Creek. Wingate itself is an unincorporated hamlet at a crossroads, without a walkable town center or downtown civic life; the nearest county seat with downtown character is Bellefonte, a couple of miles south. The Bald Eagle Area School District campus on South Eagle Valley Road is the principal civic anchor, anchoring both the elementary school and the junior/senior high school on the same campus. Housing in the area remains affordable relative to state and national benchmarks, and the district has held property tax rates flat for two consecutive years, a concrete signal to homeowners.
The district recently opened a new forestry building and fitness center, completed in fall 2025, which expands hands-on career and technical education in agriculture, forestry, and wildlife management. This allows high school students to access these courses on the district's own campus rather than traveling to an off-site vocational program, preserving instructional time and deepening the CTE pathway.
Wingate Elementary is a place where rural, outdoor-oriented families with modest means will find familiar surroundings and a small-school community. The academic performance in early literacy and numeracy, however, is lower than peers in the county, and families prioritizing strong reading and math outcomes in elementary grades should explore with the school what instructional strategies and support services are available to help students reach grade-level benchmarks.
