Martin Middle is a small, seventh- and eighth-grade school serving just over two hundred students in central Austin. The overwhelming majority of students, nearly all, qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and about four-fifths of the enrollment is Hispanic. The school's racial and economic makeup reflects the East Austin neighborhoods it draws from.

Academic performance here is substantially below both state expectations and district norms. On the most recent state assessments, proficiency rates ranged from just a few percent in math and social studies to low double digits in English language arts and science. In seventh-grade math, fewer than one in fifty students scored at proficient or above. Eighth-grade English language arts showed the strongest relative result, but still fewer than one in five tested at proficiency. Performance in science and social studies was comparable to or lower than math. These results place Martin in the bottom quartile for proficiency when compared to other schools in Travis County.
