Crockett Elementary is a small public school in the county seat of Houston County, an economically modest corner of Deep East Texas. It serves grades one through five with an enrollment around the small side for its grade band. About half the student body is Black, roughly one-quarter is Hispanic, and the remainder is mostly White, with a two-percent Asian population. A substantial majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, which tracks with the economic character of the area. The school sits on a loop road on the edge of town, away from Crockett's historic downtown.

The academic picture is notably weak across the board. On the most recent state test results, proficiency rates in math range from very low in third and fifth grades to slightly higher in fourth grade.
