Presidio Elementary serves the primary grades of a small, remote border community in far West Texas. The school enrolls roughly four hundred students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, drawn from a town where the vast majority of families live at or near poverty: nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The student body is overwhelmingly Hispanic, reflecting the binational character of Presidio and its close ties to Mexico across the Rio Grande.

The school's academic performance is weak across the board. In the most recent state testing data, proficiency rates in both English language arts and math cluster in the low single digits to low double digits across the tested grades. In reading, fourth graders achieved proficiency at around one in eight students, while fifth graders posting single-digit proficiency. Math shows a similar picture: third graders in Spanish-language assessment hit single digits, while fourth and fifth graders each reached proficiency at roughly one in five students. In science, a fifth-grade assessment yielded proficiency in only a handful of students. The school's results place it in the bottom quartile for overall academic proficiency relative to other districts in Presidio County.

A parent reading these numbers should understand that this school faces serious academic challenges. The data does not explain the causes—whether they stem from staffing, resources, curriculum coherence, student mobility, language transition, poverty's effects, or some combination—so a parent may want to look into this further with the school itself. The school does serve all comers from its attendance zone with no admissions screen, a standard public elementary model. Presidio is a tight-knit, slow-paced community of roughly three thousand people at the junction of two rivers, where extended family ties, border crossing, and binational culture are woven into daily life. Housing is inexpensive; school facilities, however, are aging. In May 2025, voters rejected a capital bond that would have funded playground and daycare upgrades at this elementary school, cafeteria expansion at the middle school, and career technical education improvements at the high school. The bond failed by a narrow margin, leaving those facility improvements unfunded and signaling the community did not prioritize the tax measure at that moment.
