Abraham Kazen Middle School closed before the data presented here was collected. The school operated in South San Antonio and served grades through middle school, but it is no longer in operation.

The data reflects performance from the school year before closure. Math and English language arts proficiency were very low across all three grades tested. In grade six, just over one in ten students met proficiency in math, and about the same share in English language arts. Grade seven showed the steepest challenge, with nearly all students falling short of proficiency in math; English language arts results were somewhat higher but still low. Grade eight, the highest grade served, showed the most proficiency of the three grades in both subjects, though still a small share of students overall. Science and social studies results for grade eight were also quite low.

The school closed as part of a broader contraction in South San Antonio ISD. In the spring before this data was gathered, the district voted to close three campuses: Kazen Middle School, Athens Elementary, and Kindred Elementary. The closure reflected budget pressures and declining enrollment the district was facing. In February 2025, the Texas Education Agency removed the district's elected board of trustees and superintendent, installing a state-appointed board of managers and new superintendent to govern the district for at least several years.

The broader context matters for families who may have attended this school or are considering other South San Antonio ISD schools. The district has shrunk its footprint, consolidating students into remaining campuses and closing its second high school. At the same time, San Antonio itself is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, but that growth has been uneven across neighborhoods and districts, and South San Antonio ISD is among the parts of the city experiencing different pressures than the wider region.
