Layton is a large suburban city and major employment center anchored by Hill Air Force Base, which sits just north of town. The city has a mix of residential neighborhoods, a major retail corridor including the Layton Hills Mall and Restaurant Row, and a defined City Center that clusters civic buildings, parks, and cultural venues. Housing in the Layton area carries a value that is close to the state's typical home price and higher than the national median. Rents have dipped slightly over the past year, while mortgage rates are in a range that makes renting the more affordable monthly option based on typical area incomes.
Vae View School is an elementary school serving pre-kindergarten through grade six, part of the Davis District. The school has a moderate enrollment for its grade band, with a notable share of students in pre-kindergarten. The student body is composed of roughly equal proportions of White students and Hispanic students, with a much smaller number of students from other racial and ethnic groups. Just under half of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a measure of economic need.
Academic performance on state assessments places Vae View School in the bottom quartile of schools in Davis County when looking at overall proficiency across tested subjects. In math and science for the most recent year, the proportion of students scoring at proficient or above was on the lower side. In English language arts from the prior year, the share was higher than in math or science but still below the middle of the school district pack. These results come from Utah's RISE assessment. A parent considering this school may want to discuss academic programs and student supports directly with the school to understand the specific approach to instruction and how the school works with families on academic progress.
The district, Davis District, opened a new comprehensive high school in Farmington in 2022, which shifted some school boundaries and feeder patterns in the area. Additionally, the statewide expansion of optional full-day kindergarten took effect in the district starting in the 2023-24 school year, providing all families access to free full-day kindergarten at their elementary school. Vae View School, covering only PK-6, feeds into this larger district system, so the high school boundary changes are a longer-term consideration for families starting at this elementary school.
