Puyallup Online Academy, known as POA, is an alternative school within the Puyallup School District. It offers online instruction for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, but in practice nearly all of its roughly 180 students are in grades seven through twelve. That enrollment is small. About half the students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. The student body is diverse: a plurality of students are white, followed by a substantial Hispanic population, and smaller shares of students who are Black, Asian, Native American, or of two or more races.
State testing results from the 2024–25 school year, the only year of data available, show low academic performance. In math, the proficiency rate for seventh graders was well below what is typical for the state, and the eighth-grade math result was suppressed, meaning the number of test takers was too small to report publicly. In English language arts, about a third of seventh graders and just over a third of eighth graders met the proficiency standard. Science at the eighth-grade level had a higher rate, but still below half. Over all tested subjects and grades, the school’s combined proficiency index places it in the bottom quartile relative to other districts in Pierce County.
