Los Altos Elementary is a small K-8 district serving a broad community within Silicon Valley's Santa Clara County. The district enrolls students across nine schools, from five elementary buildings to two junior high campuses, plus a preschool program. The student body is diverse by race and ethnicity, with substantial representation across Asian, White, Hispanic, and multiracial backgrounds. Free-and-reduced-price lunch data was not available, limiting visibility into economic need within the district.
On state assessments administered in 2024-25, Los Altos students perform well across tested grades. In English language arts, proficiency rates range across grades 3 through 8, with stronger performance in the middle grades and solid performance at the elementary level. Math proficiency is similarly consistent, with grade 6 standing out as the highest-performing cohort. Science testing at grades 5 and 8 shows proficiency in the lower 80th percentile range. These results position the district in the top quartile among Santa Clara County's districts when proficiency is measured across all tested subjects and grades combined. The district also reports very low chronic absenteeism, placing it among the county's best performers on that metric. State testing data does not capture trends because only one year of recent results is available.
The district sits in one of California's most expensive housing markets. Home values in the area served are substantially above state and national benchmarks. Rental costs are also high and rising, and housing affordability remains a significant constraint for families. Per-pupil current spending in the district falls in the upper range among county districts, supporting instruction and operations.
Two significant funding measures shape the financial landscape. Voters approved Measure A in November 2023, a recurring parcel tax set to fund teacher salaries and core programs through a set end date, replacing and expanding a prior parcel tax. In November 2024, voters also approved Measure EE, a facilities bond that will fund campus improvements across the district's nine schools and potentially a new campus in Mountain View, representing a long-term property-tax obligation for homeowners.
A structural shift is underway. The district plans to transition to a middle school model beginning fall 2028, moving sixth graders from elementary schools to the two junior high campuses, Blach and Egan. That move will expand access to electives, including foreign language, music, and robotics, for those students, but it also means that families with children currently in lower elementary grades will see a change in grade configuration and campus assignment as their children progress.
