NYC Geographic District 29 serves a majority-Black community in southeast Queens with about two-thirds of the enrollment in Pre-K through 5th grade and a smaller high school footprint. The student body is predominantly Black and Asian, with significant communities of Hispanic, American Indian, and Pacific Islander students. The district operates a broad range of schools, including elementary schools, intermediate schools, middle schools, specialized high schools, and several newer small high schools and charter-like programs. Free or reduced lunch data was not available to assess economic hardship in the student population, and information on the percentage of students with individualized education plans or English language learners was not provided.
Academic proficiency across the district shows consistent patterns. In elementary grades, the picture is stronger in reading than in math, though neither subject shows strong overall performance. A new standardized math curriculum for high schools (Illustrative Mathematics) and approved options for middle schools rolled out starting in 2024-25, phasing out the prior school-by-school discretion on math materials.
