"Bishkek International School (BIS) is a non-profit community school located in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, offering an internationally recognized education to children from the earliest grades through secondary school."

Founded on the principle that international families and local communities deserve access to a rigorous, globally minded education, BIS has grown into one of Central Asia's notable international schooling options for expat families, diplomats, and relocating professionals seeking continuity and quality for their children. The school was established through the initiative of a dedicated group of international and local parents who came together to create an institution that would serve the diverse needs of Bishkek's international community. Legally registered as a non-profit foundation in the Kyrgyz Republic on December 1, 2010, BIS held its first Advisory Council meeting in May 2011 at the Ministry of Education, with the participation of then-President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Roza Otunbaeva — a testament to the significance the school's founding carried from the very beginning. BIS opened its doors to students in September 2011, operating from a building that had originally been constructed as a school but had sat unused for many years before the school foundation purchased and repurposed it in July 2011. From those early days, the school's growth has been remarkable. Beginning with just 20 students in its inaugural year, BIS had grown to a community of 440 students by 2024, reflecting both the expanding international presence in Bishkek and the school's strengthening reputation among families seeking world-class instruction in the region. Academically, BIS offers a dual-track framework built around both American curriculum standards and the International Baccalaureate continuum. The school is authorized to deliver all three core IB programs — the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP) — providing a coherent, inquiry-based educational journey from the early years through to university preparation. This IB continuum is widely respected by universities around the world, making BIS an especially practical choice for families who anticipate onward relocation after Bishkek and need their children's credentials to travel with them. The school also benefits from U. S. State Department assistance, a further indicator of its standing within the international diplomatic and professional community. English is the language of instruction throughout all grade levels, ensuring that students arriving from English-speaking backgrounds or international school systems can transition smoothly into the BIS environment. The campus itself occupies a building with genuine scholastic roots, giving it a sense of purpose and place within the city. Bishkek, nestled in the Chuy Valley with the dramatic Tian Shan mountain range forming a striking backdrop, offers families a city that blends Soviet-era architecture with a growing modern character and a warm, community-oriented culture. What distinguishes BIS most fundamentally is its origins as a parent-founded, community-driven institution. That grassroots spirit continues to shape the school's ethos, fostering a close-knit environment where families are genuinely invested stakeholders rather than passive consumers — a quality that families new to Bishkek often find reassuring as they settle into life in this unique corner of Central Asia.
