What the research says about screen time and learning
An OECD policy paper based on PISA 2022 data found that moderate digital leisure use outside school, between two and four hours per day, was associated with higher math scores than very low or very high use. More than four hours per day was linked to lower math performance and a lower sense of belonging. At school, even one hour of digital leisure was associated with math scores about 9 points lower. The paper notes that it does not establish causality and focuses on leisure use rather than instructional technology. The finding partially supports the federal letter's distinction between recreational and educational screen time.
