Columbus School has closed. The school served grades 3 through 5 in Poughkeepsie and operated as a regular public elementary school under the Poughkeepsie City School District.

The most recent academic data available is from the 2011-12 school year. At that time, proficiency rates in mathematics ranged from roughly a quarter of students meeting state standards in grade 4 to about half in grade 5. English language arts showed similar variation, with grade 4 falling notably below the other grades tested. Science proficiency in grade 4 was higher, at just over half of students meeting standards. An earlier social studies assessment from grade 5 showed stronger performance.

Because the school is no longer operational, families cannot enroll there. Parents in Poughkeepsie with students in the elementary grades should consult the district's current school directory. The Poughkeepsie City School District recently reorganized its elementary structure beginning in the 2025-26 school year, consolidating prekindergarten and kindergarten with grades 1-2 at two buildings and grades 3-5 at three separate schools. The district also launched bus service to most elementary students for the first time in roughly decades as part of this change. Students previously served by Columbus may now attend one of the grades 3-5 schools depending on their residence and enrollment.
