Eyer Middle School serves grades six through eight in Macungie, a small borough in Lehigh County's Lehigh Valley about a short drive southwest of downtown Allentown. The school sits at the end of Buckeye Road in the area's lower-density fringe, not in the town's compact downtown with its historic Main Street but rather in the suburban landscape of surrounding Lower Macungie Township, where the public schools operate on separated campuses.
Enrollment runs at a solid mid-sized level for a middle school, with near-equal splits across the three grades. The student body is predominantly white, with Hispanic students making up a smaller but notable share. About a quarter of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting a working-to-middle-class community with real economic variability.
On state testing, Eyer's reading proficiency comes in at a solid level, with more than seven out of ten students meeting proficiency. Math proficiency sits lower, with just over half the students meeting the standard. Science results, from the prior year, landed at a notably higher level. Across all three subjects, the school's overall proficiency index places it in the top quartile relative to other districts in Lehigh County.
The reading results point to instructional strength in that domain, though math attainment is a soft spot worth watching. The East Penn School District, Eyer's parent district, is in the middle of significant structural change. In November 2023 the board voted to realign all grades across the district, which would have converted Eyer from a 6-8 middle school to a 5-6 middle school and shifted seventh and eighth graders to Lower Macungie Middle School. In August 2025 the board paused that plan indefinitely, citing construction costs and tax concerns. The district is also raising property taxes at the maximum allowable rate each year through 2030, a material and multi-year cost of ownership change.
